What to do after a sunburn

Your skin may burn if exposed to excessive amounts of sunlight without enough protection from sunscreen and clothing. To aid in the healing and soothing of stinging skin, it is critical to treat sunburn as soon as you notice it. You should seek shade as soon as possible, preferably inside.

Once inside, our home GP doctor for a sunburn in Sotogrande recommend the following to help alleviate the discomfort:

  1. Bathe or shower often in cool water to help ease the discomfort. As soon as you get out of the bathtub or shower, gently pat yourself dry, leaving a little amount of water on your skin. After that, use a moisturiser to help keep the water in your skin from evaporating. This may be of use in alleviating the dryness.
  2. For burnt skin, use a moisturising cream that includes aloe vera or soy to help soothe the skin. It is possible that you may wish to use a hydrocortisone cream that you can get without a prescription if a specific location is very unpleasant. Avoid using items with the suffix "-caine" to cure sunburn since they may irritate the skin or induce an allergic response.
  3. Drink plenty of fluids. A sunburn causes fluid to be drawn to the surface of the skin and away from the rest of the body. When you are sunburned, it is important to drink enough water to avoid dehydration.
  4. If your skin blisters, you should allow the blisters to cure on their own. You have a second-degree sunburn if your skin is swollen and blistering. It is not recommended that you burst the blisters since blisters grow to aid in the healing of your skin and to protect you from infection.
  5. While burnt skin is healing, take additional precautions to keep it safe. When you're out in the sun, make sure your clothes cover your skin. Fabrics with a tight weave perform well. When you hold the cloth up to a strong light, you should not be able to see any light leaking through the material.
