TESTING FOR DIABETES AS PART OF OUR HOME DOCTOR SERVICE

diabetes home doctor service

Diabetes is a condition which can affect people for their entire lives, and once diagnosed it is incurable - though it can be managed with the right lifestyle changes. As part of our home doctor service, we can carry out a series of tests, including blood sugar tests, to determine your risk of diabetes and help you manage your condition.

As part of our home doctor service, our doctors will be able to advise you on the best course of action should you start to notice any of the typical symptoms of type 2 diabetes. In some cases, a diabetes screen test may be recommended. These are a great preventative method for catching diabetes early and determining your risk of developing the condition. The results of these screening don't tend to constitute a diagnosis, but they are a good way of catching the early development of the disease. Instead of being taken as a diagnosis, the results should be used as part of our home doctor service to determine any further medical advice that may be appropriate for you.

If the results of your screening come back as positive, there is a change that you may have diabetes and you may be asked to have further tests in order to get a more accurate diagnosis.

Type 2 diabetes is more usually diagnosed as the result of a blood or urine test in which your results have displayed an abnormal level of blood sugar. You should always tell your doctor if you have noticed any symptoms of diabetes such as fatigue, dizziness, blurry vision or the frequent need to urinate as part of your home doctor service use.

If your doctor suspects you may have type 2 diabetes they will usually do the following:

- Check your urine and arrange for you to have a blood test.
- The results of your blood tests will usually take a couple of days to come back.
- If your results indicate that you have diabetes your GP will discuss the results with you at your next home visit and will talk you through what you will need to do to manage the condition.

You will also be advised by the team involved with our home doctor service to closely monitor your blood sugar levels on a regular basis.

By monitoring your blood sugar levels you can seriously reduce your risk of any diabetes-related complications as it will help you to keep track of how high your blood sugar levels are and how much you need to do to combat them.

You can monitor your blood sugar levels yourself by using a finger-prick test which your doctor will show you how to do as part of the home doctor service when you are first diagnosed. The more regularly you check your blood sugar the more you will come to understand how it changes as you go through your day to day life. This will make the management of your condition far easier.
