Conditions and Treatments

Ingrowing toenail

When a toenail is ingrown the skin on the side of the toenail grows over the edge of the nail, or the nail grows into the skin causing swelling, pain and redness.

The most common causes of ingrown toenails are shoes that don't fit correctly and improperly trimmed nails for example cutting nails too short or attempting to taper the corners with the shape of the toe.

Callouses

Callouses are a build up of dead skin and generally form on the heel, on the side of the big toe or on the ball of the foot. The areas can be bulbous, red and protruding or just dry and flaky.

Callouses can often take months or years to develop. There are two main causes for the development of a callous; the first is due to irritation and can be the result of ill-fitted shoes. The second is due to added pressure to an area. The foot normally adapts to added pressure from activities such as walking and running by equally distributing the weight throughout the foot. However, sometimes weight is shifted in an unequal position, which leads to a specific area of pressure, and the foot deals with this repetitive pressure by forming a callous in that spot.

Corns

Corns are calluses that occur most commonly on the top of the toes although they do also occur on the soles of the feet and between the toes. A corn is a small layer of thick, dead skin that develops to act as padding over skin tissue that has been subjected to excessive pressure, they have a hard center surrounded by inflamed skin and are a reaction to abuse and stress being an attempt by the body to protect the foot...

Excess pressure which leads to corns can be caused by tight shoes, deformed toes, seams or stitches inside shoes that rub against the toes, abnormalities of walking or bunions. They are most common in women.

Customized insoles

They are made exactly on the shape from the feet from the patient.

Studies have shown that custom insoles help the foot misalignment issues behind many injuries, because they distribute the load properly over the entire foot.

Many people don't realize these benefits only come if the insoles properly fit. Poorly fitting insoles can place your feet in unhealthy positions, impairing foot function and mobility and negatively affecting overall body alignment. They are uncomfortable and can cause pain and bruising to the arches. Custom molding is the only way to guarantee a perfect fit.

Verrucae (Plantar warts)

Verrucae are warts, warts are verrucae and are caused by the same infection. Caused by the Human Papilloma Virus HPV.

The foot is the most common site for verrucae to be found. There are 8 varieties of the virus ranging form a single lesion to mosaic or multiple lesions.

It appears on the surface of the skin and typically resembles a cauliflower, with tiny black points on it. They could me very painful.

Highly contagious and stubborn they are not easy to treat. It is wise to get verrucae treated as early as possible. Unfortunately, the common advice to 'leave them alone unless they hurt' only give verrucae a chance to spread, causing more pain, embarrassment and cost.

Diabetic Foot Care

The number of people with diabetes has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014.

Diabetic patients are included in a risk group. It is very important that they visit a foot specialist frequently in prevention. This is because the main complications are:

Reduced blood flow, neuropathy (nerve damage) and both things in the feet increases the chance of foot ulcers, infection and eventual need for limb amputation.

They should not treat their feet by there self, and seek advice from specialist
